Why Do Democrats Oppose Voter ID Laws?

Democrats are adamant that we do not need Voter ID laws.  Former President Obama claimed that the potential for voter fraud was so low that it was a waste of money and resources to bother with it.  To back up his claim he referred to the low number of criminal prosecutions in this area.

He and other Democrats have gone on to claim that such laws are really an attempt by the GOP to suppress minority voter turnout.  Is this the case?  Do Voter ID laws suppress minority voter turnout?  What are the actual facts?

Voter ID laws have been passed in a variety of states.  In Georgia, black voter turnout for the 2006 midterm elections was 42.9 percent. After Georgia passed its photo ID requirement, black turnout in the 2010 midterm rose 17.5%. Similar increases occurred in Indiana and Mississippi after they enacted their voter ID laws.

Such was also the case in North Carolina when a Voter ID law passed there.  Minority participation rose after its passage.  However, the Obama DOJ took North Carolina to Federal Court and got the law overturned.   Three Democratic-appointed judges ruled that the intent of the legislature (no verbal or written record exists) was to suppress minority participation.  This flies in the face of what actually happened.

So, if Voter ID laws actually increase minority voter participation, why are the Dems opposed? On the surface it would seem that, since minority voters tend to vote heavily Democratic, they would want such laws in place.

The real reason probably lies with the fact that the lack of such laws makes it easier to “find” votes during close elections.  In fact, the whole panoply of items such as, motor voter laws, mail-in ballots, early voting, etc., which are supposed to make it easier to vote, actually make it a lot easier to commit fraud.

One is reminded of the 1960 campaign between JFK and Nixon.  As Daniel Sobieski over at American Thinker pointed out:

“As election night victories seemingly slip away from GOP candidates like Martha McSally in Arizona, Brian Kemp in Georgia, and Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis in Florida, one can almost hear Democrat operatives and election officials asking the same question — how many votes does the Democrat candidate need?”

Motor voter laws and early voting are a plague on our electoral integrity.  Motor voter is particularly problematic in states that hand driver’s licenses out to illegal aliens.  Pennsylvania was recently found to have registered some 100,000 aliens to vote.  Such individuals can drive to the polls and vote, disenfranchising American citizens. Mail-in ballots are invitations to fraud, plagued with signatures that don’t match.  Same day registration and voting are seen as a probable cause of New Hampshire’ electoral ballots going to Hillary Clinton as thousands of Democrats from Massachusetts drove across the border and voted.

It is time for this to stop. Just what is so hard about requiring a voter to show up with an ID that proves they are an American citizen and who they say they are?

Photo IDs are required to board an airplane, open a bank account, check into a hotel, buy liquor, enter a school building, and for a host of other daily activities. Voter ID’s should be required to vote. Then debacles like what is going on in Florida can be avoided.
