Zhores A. Medvedev died last month at his home in London, where he had lived for decades. He had turned 93 the day before.  Who was Zhores Medvedev and why was he important?

According to Wikipedia,

Zhores Medvedev and his twin brother Roy were born on 14 November 1925 in TbilisiGeorgiaUSSR. In December 1950, Zhores was awarded a PhD degree for his research into sexual processes in plants. He became a Junior Research Scientist in the Agrochemistry and Biochemistry Department at Timiryazev Academy and he was promoted to Senior Research Scientist in 1954 and remained at the academy until 1963. Beginning in 1952, Medvedev had focused his attention on the problems of aging, concentrating on the turnover of proteins and nucleic acids. In 1961, he published the first paper suggesting that aging is the result of an accumulation of errors in the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. ...

Hurricane Michael Alert

The center of Michael’s eye is expected to move inland over the Florida Panhandle or Florida Big Bend area later today, move northeastward across the southeastern United States tonight and Thursday, and then move off the Mid-Atlantic coast away from the United States on Friday.

Data from Air Force Reserve and NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 130 mph (210 km/h) with higher gusts. Michael is now a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is possible today before Michael makes landfall in the Florida Panhandle or the Florida Big Bend area. (read more...

Weather Alert

Those in the Florida Panhandle, in Georgia and in Alabama need to pay attention to the path of this storm throughout the day today and tomorrow.  TS Michael is expected to become a hurricane much sooner than initially forecast.  There is a potential for strength to major hurricane status in the Northern Gulf of Mexico prior to landfall.  Those in the Mississippi coastal area should also keep an eye for updates.
