After a week that saw the British Parliament vote against the British people and the British government but for the unelected bureaucrats in Brussels, it appears that Boris Johnson may have been playing rope-a-dope with his opposition.
Brexit is the exit of the UK from the EU. The British people had voted for this a few years ago despite massive ad spending by multi-nationals and others to prevent it. Johnson was elected because the British people were tired of the constant stalling that was going on. October 31 was the latest deadline of multiple extensions previously agreed to by former PM Theresa May. If no deal was reached, then a so-called no-deal exit would take place.
The EU will never agree to any exit deal. They do not want an exit. Such an action would probably embolden a few other countries to consider the same move. The EU is top-down control over most of Europe by unelected bureaucrats. The EU is fighting to prevent their own extinction. Such extinction is probably inevitable based on current circumstances.
Johnson launched this latest maneuver to get an exit by announcing the closing of the current Parliament session until mid-October with the Queen’s approval. This means that all Parliament business must be concluded by Monday (or at latest Thursday).
Once the announcement had occurred, the Remainers (similar to our Democrats) went into a frenzy. This first action was to try to get the British courts to declare the action illegal. When that failed, they spent most of the remaining time they had to pass a law to stop Johnson from taking the UK out of the EU without a deal on October 31. This passed the House of Commons earlier last week with 21 members of Johnson’s party voting for the legislation.
Johnson immediately called for a SNAP election. This needed a two-thirds vote to be accomplished. The Remainers, knowing that the people are opposed to their blocking the exit, refused such an election.
The Guardian reported,
As Boris Johnson put it – with glee – to Jeremy Corbyn in the chamber on Wednesday night after the prime minister’s motion for a general election failed to win sufficient support: “This is the first time in history that the opposition has voted to show confidence in Her Majesty’s government.”
On Friday the House of Lords passed the bill without amendment, another highly unusual situation. This means that the bill is ready for the Queen’s signature on Monday, September 10th.
Let’s keep in mind that the Queen approved the closing of Parliament. And it is well known that she is a nationalist. Will she give her assent to this legislation?
While her assent is usually a formality, it should not quite yet be considered a fait accompli. The queen can lawfully refuse assent. And without her assent, the law is dead. Effectively, it would be vetoed. According to academic experts in the matter, there are two occasions when the monarch can and should refuse assent.
The important occasion in relation to royal assent in this case is that the Sovereign … must act upon the advice of responsible ministers.”
Professor of public law at the University of Glasgow School of Law Adam Tomkins concurs with this view. From his book Public Law: “If the monarch were given clear and firm Prime Ministerial advice that she should withhold her royal assent to a Bill which had passed through the Houses of Parliament, it seems to be the case that the monarch should follow that advice.”
Johnson had a meeting scheduled with the queen for this past weekend. Quite frankly, this would be a highly unusual action by the queen. However, there have been a series of highly unusual events in this process so far including the refusal of a SNAP election by the opposition party (showing confidence in the government???).
If the Queen does it, it will show plenty of courage. Without a doubt, the best thing for the liberty and freedom of the people would be for the Queen to refuse assent. Doing so should result in Brexit. That would get the British people out from under the thumbs of the bureaucrats in Brussels. There have been strong indications that a bilateral trade deal with America is in the offing.
Is this Johnson’s only play? Probably not. According to a Reuters report, if the Queen assents, PM Johnson simply needs to attach a letter to the Brexit delay legislation saying the U.K. government officially does NOT request any extension beyond October 31st. Then ignore the legislation.
This would put the Remainers in an awkward position where their way out would be a vote of no confidence that they just refused. And BTW while all this battering of the PM has been going on, his standing with the people has been rising. Remind you of anyone?
This brings up PDJT’s comments from a while back.
America has been quietly supporting Brexit. VP Pence gave a speech on the other “side of the pond” doing so.
Once again this is a battle between the people on Main St and the elite politicians and Deep Staters. Liberty will win if Brexit is accomplished. And then wait for the next shoe to drop in PDJT’s efforts to help all the people of the world.
