As we have noted here previously, there are ongoing attempts by the left to normalize violence against those with whom the left does not agree politically. Antifa, BLM and James Hodgkinson are all examples of people and groups who believe this approach is not only not wrong but is actually a good thing.
The assault of Sen. Rand Paul by Rene Boucher in November, 2017, is another such example. Supposedly Boucher was incensed over a pile twigs and yard clippings that were piled up on Sen. Paul’s property. The MSM tried to characterize the incident as a dispute between neighbors.
The attack certainly had all the appearances of being politically motivated. Boucher blind-side tackled Sen. Paul while he was mowing his lawn causing six broken ribs and a bruised lung. This led to two bouts of pneumonia for the Senator.
Boucher got off with a relative slap on the wrist for the attack. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, supervised probation for a year and a $10,000 fine.
A civil lawsuit by Sen. Paul has provided a more substantial penalty. A Kentucky jury has awarded over $580,000 to the Senator for the attack. While I, for one, believe that there are too many frivolous civil lawsuits, tort law is a valid remedy for actual harm that has been inflicted on someone. I believe that, in this case, justice has been served.
Perhaps if the parents of the Covington Catholic High School boys who were slandered for the Lincoln Memorial incident can succeed in bringing successful suits, then this may give pause to some who would recklessly damage the lives of innocent people.
