Pelosi Blinks

Are the Democrats backing away from the “I” word?  House Speaker Pelosi, who spent a lot of time planning the impeachment process since winning control of the House in November in the hopes of improving the Democrats’ chances in the 2020 presidential election, made an announcement on Monday.

[Nancy Pelosi] “I’m not for impeachment. This is news. I’m going to give you some news right now because I haven’t said this to any press person before. But since you asked, and I’ve been thinking about this: Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”

So, according to Pelosi, she is backing away from impeachment for “the good of the country.”  Only the most brainwashed among Democrats will believe this. Pelosi understands that impeachment is a loser for the Democrats at this point.  There never was a crime to impeach PDJT for.  It was all political grandstanding.  Pelosi was immediately joined in this disavowal by her other impeachment co-conspirators, Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler and Elijah Cummings.

Sundance over at CTH noted,

“the evidence would have to be pretty overwhelming” is a considerable change in position for HPSCI Chairman Adam Schiff who was previously open to using rumor, innuendo and supposition to launch investigations.

What happened?  What happened was the clown show that was put on by Chairman Elijah Cummings of the House Oversight Committee with the Michael Cohen testimony.  During the hearings Republicans like Jim Jordan and Mark Meadows exposed the impeachment plan for all the country to see.  Just over a third of those surveyed in a recent poll found Michael Cohen’s public testimony to Congress to be credible.  This seems to have deflated the Democrats’ plans for impeachment for the time being.

It also indicates that despite Schiff’s protestations to the contrary, there is little in the Mueller report for the Democrats to hang their hats on.  They know that the Mueller report is a loser for them.  If so and if it is published, it will lead to major league embarrassment for the Democrats.

Interestingly enough, the majority of younger voters, those between the ages of 18 and 34, said they had no opinion about the credibility of Cohen.   In addition, for both this group and females in general, less than a third of those surveyed found Cohen credible.  This had to be especially troubling to the Democrats who depend on outsized support from these groups to win elections.

It also did not help the Democrats’ cause when it was uncovered that Schiff’s staff had traveled to New York at least four times and spent at least ten hours to help prep Cohen for his testimony.  Schiff denying that this happened added more fuel to the fire.  This raises the question of whether Cohen gave testimony or engaged in political theatre.

Another problem that the Democrats have is the fact that regardless of how Americans feel about other areas of PDJT’s performance, they have consistently given the President approval for his handling of the economy.

One could argue how much direct effect a President has on economic numbers.  President Obama, who often hid from his economic numbers, tried to take credit for the booming economy in an effort to undermine the success of PDJT. However, reduced regulation and an improved tax structure (PDJT’s doings) have encouraged investment in the country.  This has resulted in historically low unemployment numbers and substantially improving wages.

A recent Gallup pollconfirmed that Americans are giving credit to the President.  This is despite 24/7/365 condemnation of the PDJT by the MSM.  This has to be especially galling to the Democrats who know from past history that good economic news tends to favor the incumbent in the White House.

Even CNN’s Harry Enten noted,

“It turns out there has been a clear correlation between said job growth and the ultimate election result. If the economy has the same job growth over the final two years of Trump’s first term as it has over the first two years (about 3%), history suggests Trump would be favored to win by a few points.”

While the Democrats appear to be turning away from the “I” word at this point, the real question is what will they do next.  I am sure this is only a retreat.  Will rogue elements in the DOJ try to pick up the pieces?  How are the Democratic rank and file taking this?  They have been told over and over that the only issue that matters is impeachment.  How are the three extreme leftist reps, Omar, Tlaib and AOC, taking this?  One of them (Tlaib) said, “We’re going to impeach the motherf****r!” when she was sworn in as a member of the House.  Will they suddenly think it is “not worth it?”
