Radicalism in America’s largest cities seems impervious to reason. Minneapolis appears ready to go ahead with getting rid of their police department. After a unanimous vote of the City Council to do so, they are now trying to figure out just how this would work. They talk about a police-free future. And that may happen sooner rather than later as more and more officers in the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) look for other places to be employed.
One protester said: “This isn’t the first time an institution that is rooted in racism has been abolished. It’s not impossible. We don’t need to scare people and beat people into submission.” My question to her would be “Who’s going to be beaten after the police go away?”
In the meantime, the criminals have taken note of what they perceive as an opportunity. Since George Floyd’s death on May 25th, more than 100 people have been injured or killed in shootings. This says nothing about the increase in other violent crimes particularly rapes.
Has the council noticed? By listening to their blather at public meetings, one would think not. Council member Steve Fletcher said that armed police officers are usually not needed.
“It’s so much more common that we’re showing up (and) the person has already left who has committed the crime.”
This seems to suggest that an unarmed officer should be sent to all reports of crimes. What happens when an armed criminal is still present? The council seems unable to follow basic logic while they try to attempt to contort their fantasy into something remotely resembling reality.
However, their actions speak a lot louder than their words. At least three members of the council, Andrea Jenkins (Ward 8), Phillipe Cunningham (Ward 4), and Alondra Cano (Ward 9), have a private security detail that is costing approximately $4500 a day. The taxpayers are footing the bill. Allegedly, they have received threats. There is no public record with the MPD attesting to this.
So, the council gets security protection at the taxpayer’s expense but the residents of Minneapolis are left to fend for themselves.
The council dragged out the bogeyman of “large numbers of white nationalists” to deflect from their obvious hypocrisy.
It is time to push back against these idiots and cowards. It is time to replace the entire Minneapolis City Council before they completely destroy what’s left of Minneapolis. It is time for class action lawsuits against the Council for failing to provide basic protections to the citizenry in times of trouble.
