The newly-minted pair heading up the Democratic Party ticket have gone into full communist mode. On Thursday they made a joint appearance calling for a nationwide mask mandate.
According to Biden,
“Every single American should be wearing a mask when they’re outside for the next three months at a minimum. Every governor should mandate mandatory mask-wearing.”
This is just plain idiotic. The virus will do what the virus is going to do. Masks may slow the spread (the data is inconclusive), but it will not stop the spread. If one thinks that masks work, then why is the Philippines, a heavily masked country, having their biggest spike yet? Why is Scandinavia down to an almost trivial number of deaths with almost no mask wearing? Why has Hong Kong with all of their draconian lockdowns, contact tracing and mask mandates seen more than a 1000% increase in daily cases recently? These situations in and of themselves do not prove that masks are useless. They do suggest that simple mask-wearing doesn’t have the miraculous results that some people seem to think they do.
China has a robust contact tracing system. A study was done in China about the spread of the virus. They determined where some 7,000 Chinese had contracted the virus. How many were outside? Just one.
Biden went on,
“Let’s institute a mask mandate nationwide starting immediately, and we will save lives… Protect your fellow citizens. Step up. Do the right thing. It’s not about your rights. It’s about your responsibilities as an American.”
Biden is pretending that wearing a mask is some kind of cure. It isn’t. Biden then gives the game away. Biden says, “It’s not about your rights.” At least he told the truth once during this briefing. The Democrats are coming to do away with your rights as an American. You will submit to whatever whim the government has or else. Your rights do not matter.
The icing of the cake so to speak was the proposal to have federal safety regulators enforcing testing at work and to institute 100,000 “contact tracers.” These tracers would be federal employees, of course. They would be empowered to track people down. How would they do this? Warrantless searches in the name of providing safety to the public. In other words, they would be the East German Stasi or the Soviet Union’s KGB. What will be next? Welding the doors shut on the houses of people who test positive as they did in China?
Of course, it would not start out that way. The media would trumpet this as a way to stop the virus and save lives. That’s hogwash! I will repeat what I said above. The virus will do what the virus will do. We are seeing this all over the world. Except for those over seventy years old, the mortality rates for COVID-19 are equal to or less than the seasonal flu. Do we shut the country down for the flu?
Later on the media would transform this mission into one of continuing to “protect the public” from whatever health dangers they can conjure up. The contact tracers would become a permanent intrusion into the private affairs of Americans.
Kamala Harris chimed in, “that’s what real leadership looks like. We just witnessed real leadership, which is Joe Biden.”
God help us if this represents real leadership. Taking away people’s rights to the quiet enjoyment of their life and liberty is real leadership only in totalitarian regimes, not in America.
The media would also say that this is the only way to get the economy up safely. This ignores the reality that the economy has recovered quite well and safely in those areas of the country where the governors have not been acting like tinpot dictators. In fact, the only reason that the economy is not back up safely across the country is the efforts of Democratic governors to prevent it.
This approach of the Democrats is typical of their approach to any problem the country faces. The Democrats believe that all problems should be solved by Washington. They ignore the reality that Billings, Montana is different from NYC. It is also typical that such an approach would amass more power in the hands of the political elite.
Should the federal government have a role in the fight against these kinds of illnesses? Absolutely! The role should be to backstop the states. They should help obtain supplies that the states cannot get on their own. They should provide expert guidance that states and localities can choose to follow or not based on local conditions.
All of this hysteria over COVID-19 has just one purpose. It’s not about protecting the public. It’s not about doing what is best for Americans. It’s about getting rid of President Trump so that those who have been suckling at the public trough can go on doing so.
Many of us have understood this for some time. Recently one of the elite members of the Democratic Party, one Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, told us this in a tweet that has since been deleted.
