Preparations for the arrival of Hurricane Ida should be completed today.  Ida is gaining strength rapidly.  She’s pushing a lot of water.  Wind field – NHS reflects approximately 60 miles across of hurricane winds and 250 miles of tropical storm winds.  People in the coastal area of Louisiana and Mississippi should  pay close attention to local officials and heed all evacuation orders.  [National Hurricane Center]

Hurricane Delta is approaching the Gulf Coast and is expected to make landfall later tonight.  Please remain aware of its potential for destruction.  This is expected to be a CAT-3 event with winds approaching 115 mph.  Be safe.

Please stay safe and keep one eye on the path of this storm if you live in the southeast.

Everyone on the east coast of Florida pay attention!

The eye-wall of hurricane Dorian now carries 185 mph winds outward 45 miles from center.  It cannot be overstated how dangerous this storm has become.  Very few structures can withstand winds of that scale for any prolonged duration of time.

This is a ‘topography changing’ event.

At 200 PM EDT (1800 UTC), the extremely distinct eye of Hurricane Dorian was located near latitude 26.5 North, longitude 77.1 West. Dorian is moving toward the west near 7 mph (11 km/h). A slower westward motion should continue for the next day or two, followed by a gradual turn toward the northwest.. Zhores A. Medvedev died last month at his home in London, where he had lived for decades. He had turned 93 the day before.  Who was Zhores Medvedev and why was he important?

Zhores Medvedev and his twin brother Roy were born on 14 November 1925 in Tbilisi, Georgia, USSR. In December 1950, Zhores was awarded a PhD degree for his research into sexual processes in plants. He became a Junior Research Scientist in the Agrochemistry and Biochemistry Department at Timiryazev Academy and he was promoted to Senior Research Scientist in 1954 and remained at the academy until 1963. Beginning in 1952, Medvedev had focused his attention on the problems of aging, concentrating on the turnover of proteins and nucleic acids. The center of Michael’s eye is expected to move inland over the Florida Panhandle or Florida Big Bend area later today, move northeastward across the southeastern United States tonight and Thursday, and then move off the Mid-Atlantic coast away from the United States on Friday.

Data from Air Force Reserve and NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 130 mph (210 km/h) with higher gusts. Michael is now a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
