The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the resignations of two top vaccine officials on Tuesday. Reports indicate the two were leaving in anger over the Biden administration’s plan to roll out COVID-19 booster shots before officials had a chance to study and review it.
The FDA’s two most senior regulators responsible for the oversight of vaccines, Marion Gruber and Phil Krause, surprised most of the FDA as well as vaccine developers when they announced their resignations. While no official reason was given, political pressures over COVID vaccine booster shots appear to be the proximate cause. Several of the FDA’s staff feel that the experts have been cut out of the decision making. There is a groundswell of opinion that the plan to offer boosters to adults is premature and unnecessary.
One senior health official said that political appointees within the White House were largely responsible for the mid-August booster shot announcement. This was not a decision by the experts and has fueled finger-pointing across the administration.
It was “the administration’s booster plan; it wasn’t the FDA’s booster plan,” said Paul Offit, a University of Pennsylvania infectious disease expert who sits on FDA’s vaccine advisory committee.
