There is a switch on the table, and establishment Democrats are standing over it.
One side reads Democratic Socialist Party. The other reads Save the Country. Which way will the Democrats go?
Senator Chris Murphy went on Meet the Press after socialist candidates swept New York primaries and said he wants a big tent party. Senator Adam Schiff said the same thing this week on CNN. Then he went further. He acknowledged the DSA bylaws are pretty extreme, and said he would “rather be in that big tent in the majority” than sit in a smaller party stuck in the minority.
Read that again, because it is the entire cartoon in two sentences.
Schiff knows what is in the document. He knows what the DSA is. He wants the seats more.
Here is where the big tent argument falls apart.
A tent implies the people already inside get to stay. That is not what is happening on the ground. In Colorado, a sitting Democrat lost her seat to a DSA challenger. That is not a coalition adding a wing. That is a replacement.
Governor JB Pritzker went on CNN and called the socialist primary wins the recipe for winning in 2026. Congressman Seth Moulton said his party needs a big tent to hold a majority. This is no longer an extreme fringe adjusting itself to fit the party. It is the party adjusting itself to fit the extreme fringe.
So what is in the document? The DSA program, “Workers Deserve More,” calls for abolishing the Senate outright, moving to a single chamber legislature, and replacing the presidency and the Supreme Court with an executive and a judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress. Their national co-chair confirmed every line of it on camera.
Another item is to place the largest corporations and essential industries under government ownership. What could go wrong there?
Now hold that up against Senator Schiff’s math. The senators being asked to widen the tent are the very senators the newcomers intend to erase. The Senate does not get reformed in that plan. It gets deleted. And Schiff sits in it.
Not everyone is going quietly. James Carville has told Democrats plainly to draw a line and say this is not who we are. He is being ignored by the people who hold actual gavels.
In Federalist No. 62 and No. 63, Publius explained why the Senate exists. It slows the passions of a single moment. It gives smaller states a voice that population alone would never grant them. It keeps a temporary majority from rewriting the country in an afternoon.
Take it away and look at what is left. A judiciary answerable to the legislature is not a check, it is staff. An executive chosen by that same body is not a president, it is a manager.
No fair representation. No checks and balances. No limit on government, only a deeper dependence on it.
You can rename socialism as often as you like. The label changes every few years. The concentration of power never does. What the DSA wants is a totalitarian state.
