Civility

Throughout the election campaign the Democrats downplayed the “I” word, that is, impeachment. They knew from their polling that talking about impeachment would hurt their chances in the mid-term elections.

They also whined about the lack of civility in Washington claiming that only returning Democrats to power would restore civility.  How’s that working out now that the Democrats control the House?

Rashida Tlaib (D, MI-13) was sworn on Thursday as one of the first Muslim women in Congress.  Although born in America she describes herself as Palestinian-American.  She represents Detroit and the surrounding suburbs. As with Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, she is being promoted as a rising new voice of the Democratic Party.  Tlaib is touted as an example of the Democrats’ commitment to inclusion and diversity.

To highlight her professional and civil approach to political discourse, Ms. Tlaib delivered the following message to her enthusiastic supporters:

What she said, “We’re going to go in there and we’re going to impeach the motherfucker”

Nancy Pelosi, the newly sworn-in Speaker of the House, condoned Ms. Tlaib’s remarks when she said while she would not speak that way, she “…was not in the censorship business.”

The most frightening aspect of this situation is that there are citizens of this country electing people to Congress with views like this!  This demonstrates that Tlaib, as a rising star of the Democrat Party, is promoting a policy of hate.  What will she do next…say that people who do not support her views should be disenfranchised or worse?

I suspect that, moving forward, we will see more of this kind of “civility” from the modern Democratic Party.
