The EU has convinced the Netherlands that they must reduce nitrogen emissions in order to be a member in good standing within the EU. The Netherlands is the largest exporter of agricultural products in the EU. They are second only to the US as an agricultural exporter in the world.
The Dutch Council of State passed a law in 2019 requiring every activity that emits nitrogen to obtain a permit. Consequently, the expansion of dairy, poultry and pig farms, which produce nitrogen – in the form of ammonia – from animal manure has been curbed.
Let’s understand that nitrogen is the most common element in our atmosphere. As compared to oxygen, nitrogen is four times more abundant in the Earth’s atmosphere (78.084%). Moreover, it is also known as the seventh most abundant element found in the universe.
In an effort to comply with strict European Union standards based largely on the false premise that mankind is causing catastrophic climate change, the Netherlands plans to force the sale and closure of 3,000 farms. The farmers themselves will have no choice in the matter.
Dutch farmers have been protesting by blocking highways, burning hay bales, dumping manure and picketing outside the homes of public officials. However, all of this appears to be for naught.
