Friday, July 17th was the 30th anniversary of the tragic end of flight TWA-800. TWA-800, a 747, originated from JFK airport and was bound for Paris when it was destroyed off the South Shore of Long Island in 1996.
The crash was witnessed by hundreds of people enjoying a warm summer evening outdoors. In all, the FBI interviewed more than 700 witnesses. These agents included members of the FBI’s missile team. They determined that well more than 100 witnesses were considered excellent. The evidence for a missile strike was considered to be overwhelming.
This could not be allowed to be the story that the public received. The NYTimes followed the Clinton administration’s lead and buried the story to help Bill Clinton win a second term. As Jack Cashill detailed in his book, the FBI buried evidence that pointed to such a conclusion.
To this date, much of the country (but not airline pilots) believe that an explosion in a center fuel tank on the airliner was the cause of the crash. Supposedly this was a result of an electrical fire in the tank. This was the result of the “investigation” after four years. This is still the officially-stated cause of the crash. However, they were never able to replicate the act. No 747 was ever taken out of service worldwide to “correct” the problem. Why?
Some people want to point to Bush 43 as the President who showed other politicians that one could successfully lie to the world about certain things. However, Slick Willy put George Bush to shame with this effort in 1996.
Over the years, one network after another has taken a stab at unraveling the mystery of TWA Flight 800. Now Judicial Watch has produced a new documentary on this subject. It is well worth 45 minutes.
At one point the narrator asks, “Why do you care about this? It’s 30 years ago.” We care because people were killed and the truth about their deaths has been suppressed. Why did FBI agents sneak in at night and hammer parts of the fuselage to erase evidence of an explosion outside the aircraft? Is there nothing that some people will not do to stay in power?
One theory that was not explored in the documentary was the one where a Navy missile malfunctioned during some exercise. Multiple Navy vessels (including at least three subs) were in the area when the accident happened. All immediately left the area. Why?
Also not explored was the testimony of perhaps the best of all eyewitnesses, Tom Young. Young was nowhere near Long Island. As Young told the president in a recent letter, he was recovering in a Hong Kong hospital bed, his back in traction. For eight days following the disaster, he and his wife watched British and Chinese TV news. What they saw, roughly four times an hour, was a video of “what appeared to be a missile being launched, curving to the left as it accelerated and climbed, followed by two flashes, the first being small and brief—and a subsequent, secondary explosion, much greater in power.”
